Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology has announced a new breakthrough that could one day provide power to cell phones and other electronics devices by generating electricity from blood flow in the body. Researcher Zhong Lin Wang from the Georgia Institute of Technology have devised a method that allows the generation of energy by converting low-frequency vibrations from body movement, heartbeat, blood flow, and the wind into electricity. The discovery uses zinc oxide nanowires that generate electricity when subjected to mechanical stress. The nanowires about 1/5,000th of the diameter of a human hair and about 1/25th of the length of a human hair can be grown on materials like metals, ceramics, polymers, and clothing. Wang sees the technology being integrated into military clothing where electricity can be generated and used to power devices in the field such as radios and night vision goggles. The nanowires could also be used to power biosensors implanted under the skin.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students have also recently announced a new shock absorber that could be used in future hybrid or electric vehicles which is able to generate electricity from small bumps in the road while also making the vehicle drive smoother on the road.

Britain's long loved pubs under closure threat |
The Great English Drinkers and Their Times, Britain's national pastime in taverns and inns coming to an end? The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) released startling figures in the first week March that there are now 39 pubs closing in Britain each week. The closure rate has been creeping upwards for the past six or seven years. The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) asserts that about 2,000 pubs have closed in the past 12 months, with the loss of 20,000 jobs. Factors leading to pub closures are:1)Smoking ban 2) Pints of beer will be followed by cups of tea at closing time 3) higher alcohol duties 4) the wide availability of cheap beer and wine in supermarkets and corner shops 5) converting the underperforming pub building into flats could bring more money 6) weakening consumer confidence. 7) soaring utility rates.
Tim Haworth, an antiques dealer, and his wife Alison revived The Bear At Home which was named Oxfordshire's Pub of the Year by Camra in 2007. They transformed it to a profitable pub by opening seven days a week, providing good food not ridiculously expensive, held a beer festival to help to celebrate Moreton Cricket Club's 150th anniversary last year, allocating beer garden for traditionalists who can play Aunt Sally while neophytes can log on to the pub wi-fi - a homely boozer good for family, dogs, hikers, bikers, whoever.
Co-editor of The Good Pub Guide, Fiona Stapley believes that the pubs best placed to survive are those that diversify. A lot of pubs are starting to open for breakfast, as well as offering internet facilities or running shops. These are the pubs that are going to survive: pubs with hard-working, flexible landlords who really care about their pubs and really care about their customers. For rural pubs, diversification often means broadening the business (like providing post office service) far beyond the traditional parameters of selling beer and packets of prawn cocktail crisps.
Many old haunts have gone to the wall. People are more and more becoming isolated in their homes and ordering in Pizza's, takeaways, drink etc. Many shop on line even for groceries. Drinking pints at home (where you can smoke if you must) instead of down the pub. How acurate was the film Soylent Green?.

Cuba awaits its oil boom and runs short on cash |
The U.S. Geological Survey in 2005 estimated that as much as 9.3 billion barrels of oil could lie off the island's north coast, while Cuban geologists put that number at 20 billion barrels in October 2008. For the deep-sea oil, Cuba needs the technical expertise of major western oil companies to get to any of the unexploited crude but on Feb. 7 the U.S. marked the 47th year of a trade embargo that has blocked producers with the technical ability to drill that deep, denying Cuba what could be a massive windfall. U.S. law also forbids international companies from investing in expropriated American property in Cuba and could penalize offenders by revoking travel visas or restricting access to drilling contacts in the U.S. portion of the Gulf. Cuba now imports about half the roughly 200,000 barrels of oil consumes a day at a discount from leftist ally Venezuela. The much needed foreign currency as an oil exporter state to modernize its communist economy where wages that average less than a dollar a day is thus hampered.
The much needed foreign currency is exacerbated by falling prices for nickel, Cuba's top export. Also the Soviet-era equipment the island traded Moscow for sugar needed to be replaced. Havana needs hard currency for President Raul Castro to raise state salaries, which support about 90 percent of the island's working population on an average $19.70-a-month wage. The island akso badly needs cash to buy the food it distributes as part of monthly rations, and to import scarce construction materials to combat a housing crisis exacerbated by last year's storms.
This video shows the rolling style of the roller which is much better than the Dominican Cohiba roller. In Dominican Republic they use a bunching machine so they can roll many more cigars in one day, but you dont get the same quality of properly spaced filler leaf. However, the tobacco in the Dominican Cohiba is aged, and fermented much more than in Cuba so the taste is better.
U.S. oil majors sitting on huge stacks of cash are desperate to expand their buisness to Cuban oil awaiting Obama's policy in U.S.-Cuba relations to raise restrictions on U.S. investment in Cuba. VIA

Global Bank, Global Currency Within 15 Years |
The financial crisis will lead to the creation of a global central bank and a global single currency within 15 years as according to the head of market analysis for Schneider Foreign Exchange Stephen Gallo. Gallo said one of the things that caused the financial crisis was an over expansion of the money supply on a global basis and that central banks are going to need to pay more attention to what’s going on with the global money supply rather than the money supply just in their own borders.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, EU heads such as Joaquin Almunia and establishment media outlets like the Wall Street Journal amongst many others have all used the economic crisis as an excuse to argue for greater financial power. Or is it that the globalists’ call for a centralized global economic order has nothing to do with providing solutions to the crisis but everything to do with providing themselves with more power and control over the world financial system?
American congressman Ron Paul have tirelessly argued that the only way to solve financial crisis is to work, produce and save - not to create credit out of thin air. Paul stressed that capital could not be created out of thin air by the Federal Reserve but to work hard, produce, live within our means and what is left over is called capital, contrary to telling consumers to spend and continue the process.

U.K. largest drop in house prices on record |
U.K.land Registry house recorded prices dropped by a record 15.1 per cent in January 2009 compared with a year ago. It is the largest drop since the Land Registry began its records in January 1995. The average property now costs £156,753, having dropped 0.8 per cent during last month. House prices in London and Wales have been particularly badly hit, dropping 14.1 per cent and 19.7 per cent respectively. During the year to November 2008 the drop-off in housing sales fell by 67 per cent from 33,404 from 100,730 in England and Wales. n London, only 3,504 house sales were completed in November 2008 compared with 12,719 in November 2007, representing a fall of 72 per cent. The actual drop in house prices could be worse and due to the lack of affordable mortgages and rising unemployment amid the credit crisis sales would remain low as to economists point of view. VIA

Brazil: Girl, 9, Has Abortion Despite Church's Objections |
A NINE-year-old Brazilian girl pregnant was believed to be sexually abused since she was aged six by her 23-year-old stepfather. She was found to be four months pregnant with a twin after being taken to hospital suffering stomach pains. She was being cared for by a medical and psychological team in the Maternal-Child Institude in the northern city of Recife, close to her hometown of Alagoinha in Pernambuco state.
She underwent an abortion Wednesday, March 04, 2009 at the public university hospital. The director, Fatima Maia said the 15-week-old pregnancy posed a serious risk to the 80-pound (36-kilogram) girl. "She is very small. Her uterus doesn't have the ability to hold one, let alone two children," But Marcio Miranda, a lawyer for the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife in northeastern Brazil, said the girl should have carried the twins to term and had a Caesarean section. Brazil is home to more Catholics than any other nation and there were complaints from Brazil's Roman Catholic church against the abortion. Abortion is illegal in Brazil except in cases of rape or if the woman's health is in danger.
The 23-year-old stepfather was also allegedly abused the girl's physically handicapped 14-year-old sister. He was arrested on Thursday March 05, 2009 as he attempted to flee to another region in Brazil, and was being kept in protective custody.

Lesbians subjected to "corrective rape" in South Africa |
South African Human Rights Commission backed, international NGO ActionAid said the horrific crimes against lesbians were going unrecognised by the state and unpunished by the legal system. Lesbians living in South Africa are being subjected to "corrective rape" and severe violence by men trying to "cure" them of their sexual orientation. Research shows 86 per cent of black lesbians from the Western Cape live in fear of sexual assault. Triangle, a gay rights organisation, said it deals with up to 10 new cases of "corrective rape" every week.
In April last year when Eudy Simelane, former star of South Africa's national female football squad, became one of the victims of "corrective rape". The partially clothed body of Eudy Simelane, former star of South Africa's acclaimed Banyana Banyana national female football squad, was found in a creek in a park in Kwa Thema, on the outskirts of Johannesburg. Simelane had been gang-raped and brutally beaten before being stabbed 25 times in the face, chest and legs. As well as being one of South Africa's best-known female footballers, Simelane was a voracious equality rights campaigner and one of the first women to live openly as a lesbian in Kwa Thema. Since then a tide of violence against lesbian women in South Africa has continued to rise and scores more women have been deliberately targeted for rape in a macho culture society which seeks to oppress women and sees them as merely sexual beings macho culture, which seeks to oppress women and sees them as merely sexual beings.
The July 2008 trial of the three men accused of Simelane's rape and murder has produced the first conviction, when one man who pleaded guilty to her rape and murder was jailed last month, February 2009.
While hate crimes – especially of a sexual nature – are rife, it is not something that the South African government has prioritised as a specific project as acclaimed by South Africa's national prosecuting authority.

The resilient Cockroaches |
Cockroaches are one of the most commonly noted household pest insects. They feed on human and pet food, and can leave an offensive odor. They can also passively transport microbes on their body surfaces including those that are potentially dangerous to humans, particularly in environments such as hospitals. Cockroaches infestations have been shown to be linked with allergic reactions in humans. One of the proteins that triggers allergic reactions has been identified as tropomyosin. These allergens have also been found to be linked with asthma. American cockroaches have been known to live up to three months without food and a month without water. Frequently living outdoors, although preferring warm climates and considered "cold intolerant," they are resilient enough to survive occasional freezing temperatures.
Wasps in the family Evaniidae are perhaps the most effective insect predators, as they attack the egg cases, and wasps in the family Ampulicidae are predators on adult and nymphal cockroaches (e.g., Ampulex compressa). The house centipede is probably the most effective control agent of cockroaches, though many homeowners find the centipedes themselves objectionable. Bait stations, gels containing hydramethylnon or fipronil, as well as boric acid powder, are toxic to cockroaches. Baits with egg killers are also quite effective at reducing the cockroach population. Additionally, pest control products containing deltamethrin or pyrethrin are very effective.
In Singapore and Malaysia, taxi drivers use Pandan leaves as a cockroach repellent in their vehicles. In Russia, some people, after opening all cupboards, leave a saucepan half-full of sulfur burning on a gas ring, then quickly come back in to switch it off (with gas mask) and leave the residence for a few days. This is said to be protective for ten years.
Recently, a method called the Vegas roach trap has gained popularity as a successful way to control a cockroach infestation. It's an easy and almost free way to keep the nasty critters out of your house. All you need is a glass jar, and some used coffee grounds and water. The bugs love the smell and the moisture. The homemade trap is made from any glass jar containing used coffee grounds and water. Placing the mouth of the jar next to the wall, the roaches are able to crawl up the wall and into the jar, to drown, or at least never escape since they are unable to climb the glass walls. Apparently, only cockroaches are attracted to it.Roach Facts:
The world's largest roach (which lives in South America) is six inches long with a one-foot wingspan.
Roaches By the Numbers
6 -- Number of legs on a cockroach
18 -- Number of knees on most cockroaches (at least!)
40-- Number of minutes cockroaches can hold their breath
75 -- Percentage of time that cockroaches spend just resting (how lazy can you get?)
5,000 -- Number of species of cockroaches worldwide
Some female cockroaches mate once and are pregnant for the rest of their lives (bummer).
Cockroaches can run up to three miles in an hour. (Hey, it's no marathon, but it's not bad.)
A cockroach heart is nothing but a simple tube with valves. The tube can pump blood backwards and forwards in the insect. The heart can even stop moving without harming the roach.
Most species of roaches live in the tropics. But roaches live all over the world, including the North and South Poles. Pest cockroaches can withstand temperatures as cold as 32°F (0°C), but will die if the temperature goes much below that. In extremely cold places, however, they survive by moving in with humans.
Cockroaches can climb walls because they are equipped with a set of little claws on their feet designed for that very purpose.
Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects on the planet. Some species are capable of remaining active for a month without food and are able to survive on limited resources like the glue from the back of postage stamps. Some can go without air for 45 minutes or slow down their heart rate. In one experiment, cockroaches were able to recover from being submerged underwater for half an hour.
It is popularly suggested that cockroaches will "inherit the earth" if humanity destroys itself in a nuclear war. Cockroaches do indeed have a much higher radiation resistance than vertebrates, with the lethal dose perhaps 6 to 15 times that for humans. However, they are not exceptionally radiation-resistant compared to other insects, such as the fruit fly.

U.S. paid $1 million to ship two 19-cent washers |
Charlene Corley, 47, co-owner of the plumbing and electrical firm C&D Distributors, who supplied parts to the military, is awaiting sentence after pleading guilty on 16 Aug 2007 to defrauding the Pentagon. She faces 20 years in jail. Still awaiting prison term, on Friday 27th February 2009, her lawyer appealed for leniency, claiming that it was all Wooten’s fault and that Corley, as a volunteer, transformed an autistic child into an honor student. Darlene Wooten the other owner and Charlene Corley's twin sister, committed suicide after being contacted by federal investigators. On the day she killed herself, Wooten wrote a check to the government for $4.5 million.
Nothing compared to an extravagant claim by a South Carolina firm: almost $1m for two metal washers worth 19c each. The owners of C&D Distributors of Lexington, South Carolina, submitted online bids to the Defense Department to supply hardware components, plumbing fixtures, electronic equipment and other items to US bases round the world, including Iraq and Afghanistan. The most expensive washers in history were part of $20.5m the company stole from the Pentagon over the last 10 years. C&D fabricated shipping costs into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, as in the case of the washers, although the value of the items purchased rarely topped $100. The company took advantage of an automated system intended to cut out red tape by making speedy payments. It claimed $998,798 for sending the two washers, which could have been put in an envelope and posted through normal mail for a few dollars. Other bills included $445,640 for shipping one elbow pipe worth $8.75, $492,096 for a machine thread plug and $403,436 for six screws worth $59.94.
Picture left:Lock washers are meant for applications where the components of the joint or the threads may permanently deform enough to reduce bolt tension. Properly applied lock washers are not "mashed flat" they are left with some spring in them.
There are applications, ex some automobile starter motor mounts, that stipulate the use of lock washers. Lock washers usually have a plain washer under them, next to whatever part is being tightened. Lock washers come in several styles. Spring, Wave, Internal Tooth, External Tooth, Ribbed, lots of different types. Sometimes, the lock washer will have a tab on the inside which fits into a hole in the part being held on. After you tighten the nut, part of the washer is bent over against the nut. This keeps the nut from loosening. Other times there is a groove in the end of the male threaded part and, after tightening, part of the nut is bent into that groove. This is called a Key Nut. These bendy type washers require a new washer or nut every time you disassemble a part. Nuts and bolts can also be locked in place by chemical thread lockers and by safety wire.

Girls being force-fed for marriage as junta revives fattening farms |
Fears are growing for the fate of thousands of young girls in rural Mauritania, where campaigners say the cruel practice of force-feeding young girls for marriage is making a significant comeback since a military junta took over the West African country.
Mauritania, Africa's newest oil-producing nation is one of the few African countries where, on average, girls receive more food than boys. Now only around one in 10 girls are treated this way. The treatment has its roots in fat being seen as a sign of wealth - if a girl was thin she was considered poor, and would not be respected. Mauritania, largely desert and twice the size of France, has a population of more than 3 million. It is an Islamic republic, the westernmost member of the 22-strong Arab League and one of the world's poorest countries. It is an ally of the US in its "war on terror" and has diplomatic relations with Israel. Mauritania has suffered a series of coups since independence from France in 1960. The latest, in Thursday 7 August 2008, saw General Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz seize power in a bloodless coup after the elected president, Sidi Cheikh Ould Abdallahi (Picture) tried to sack him.
The resurgence of the practice in rural Mauritania is a depressing setback for campaigners after previous education and awareness campaigns on the dangers of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The government then even commissioned ballads condemning fattening. Fat women are traditionally seen as more desirable. Obesity is seen as a sign a husband cares for his wife. Obesity is revered among Mauritania's white Moor Arab population and in rural Mauritania you still see the rotund women that the country is famous for. To men here, fat is sexy. And in this patriarchal region, many Mauritanian women do everything possible — and have everything possible done to them — to put on pounds.
Aminetou Mint Ely, head of the Association of Women Heads of Households and children's rights lawyer, Fatimata M'baye, insist the fat "ideal" is back against claims by political scientist Mohamed el-Mounir, 38, that western influence had wiped out the allure of feminine fat. Ely cites the life-threatening weight-gain practices of some grown women take animal hormones or buy prescription drugs with appetite-enhancing side-effects in order to remain fat, as adults. ( At the capital’s open-air market a buyer can easily secured a gold box of Indian-made dexamethasone tablets, a prescription steroid hormone that can cause sharp weight gain.)
Fatimata M'baye, echoed Ely's pessimism cited she has never managed to bring a case in defence of a force-fed child. The politicians are scared of questioning their own traditions. Rural marriages usually take place under customary law or are overseen by a marabou (a Muslim preacher). No state official gets involved, so there is no arbiter to check on the age of the bride. Yet Mauritania had signed both international and African treaties protecting the rights of the child.
Aminetou Mint Ely, a women's rights campaigner, said girls as young as five were still being subjected to the tradition of leblouh every year. The practice sees them tortured into swallowing gargantuan amounts of food and liquid - and consuming their vomit if they reject it. A successful fattening process will see a 12-year-old weigh 80kg. By the age of 15 she will look 30.
Leblouh is intimately linked to early marriage and often involves a girl of five, seven or nine being ‘gavage’(a French term for force-feeding geese to obtain foie gras), obliged to eat excessively to achieve female roundness and corpulence, so that she can be married off as young as possible. Girls from rural families are taken for leblouh at special "fattening farms" where older women, or the children's aunts or grandmothers, will administer pounded millet, camel's milk and water in quantities that make them ill. A typical daily diet for a six-year-old will include two kilos of pounded millet, mixed with two cups of butter, as well as 20 litres of camel's milk. Fingers are often clamped between two sticks, a frequently-used instrument of torture which will stem the urge to vomit by distracting her with some local pain.
Fatematou, a voluminous woman in her sixties told BBC World Service's The World Today programme it is not cruel to make girls fat (beating and force feeding children)and she has seen 10-year old girls giving birth. "Once they are fat and beautiful they can serve their men well, once they are fat they can be married,"
Picture: Women and men exercise around a sports stadium in the city of Nouakchott, Mauritania. Husbands often get upset when their wives try to shed weight because the desert culture prizes corpulence.
Mohamed el-Moktar Ould Salem, a 52-year-old procurement officer, blames the brightly colored, head-to-toe mulafas that hide all but the most voluptuous female curves for shaping the men’s preferences. A slender woman, he said, “just looks like a stick wrapped up.” "Women are very sensitive about their weight,” “She just wants to keep up a good image.”

Wife admits exercising husband to death |
Picture:Christine Newton-John, formerly John Vallandingham
Newton-John 41, who used to be John Vallandingham before a sex change operation in 1993, stopped her husband from leaving the water in a swimming pool 43 times. Against surveillance video which showed Christine Newton-John, 41, pulling James Mason around the pool by his arms and legs, the transsexual woman admitted exercising her 73-year-old husband to death in the swimming pool. James and Christine had known each other for a number of years and married in 2006 . Police chief Joseph Stehlik the video is bone-chilling and sinister, showing Mr Mason resting his head on the side of the pool several times while gasping for breath. Mr Mason had a heart attack on June 2, 2008 after the extended swim session in Middlefield, Ohio. The couple had been married three years. Geauga County Prosecutor David Joyce said they couldn't hear what the struggling man was saying on the video tape as it had no audio which is insufficient for a murder conviction. Newton-John pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and faces up to five years in prison. There were previous complaints that Mr Mason was being abused.
